A simulation is a program that allows users to take on a persona and enter into an event or place either online or through a purchased program, in a safe environment. These events can take place in either the past, present or future as simulations allow the compression or extension of time, for example, on the simulation game (aptly named) The Sims, gamers are able to fast forward through time or pause time. Conversely, on the cult classic World of Warcraft, events occur in real time, in other words, game play time correlates with time in reality. The aforementioned program, The Sims, is one of the most well known and successful simulation games available. The program allows users to create, design and run the lives of the characters they create. They also determine how their characters go about their daily ‘lives’, that is, when they eat, sleep and go to the bathroom, as well as their jobs, and relationships. The user is, ultimately, in control of every facet of their character’s life. Below is a video in which users discuss what they have done using The Sims and why they enjoy the program.
There are an array of simulations available online that focus on different Key Learning Area’s, however, many have prescribed outcomes and expectations. The focus of this essay will be the game The Sims and the ways it can be used as a new and unexpected learning tool in any classroom. This will be covered later.
